Turn Vision into Action: Setting Goals for a Successful Year Ahead

Multiple yellow post it notes are on a turquoise wall. A hand holding a black marker is underlining the word "week" on one of them. Others say "To do," "goal," and "Friday."

Reflecting on the past and envisioning the future is just the beginning. Success comes from transforming those ideas into actionable goals. Research shows that clearly defined, written goals significantly increase the likelihood of success. And, those goals need to challenge you. Most studies show that setting challenging and specific goals results in better performance than easy goals, no goals, or “do your best” goals. But how do you translate your aspirations into tangible outcomes? Goal setting is the bridge that connects your vision with meaningful action.

Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible — Tony Robbins

Goals aren’t just tasks to complete, they’re tools to help you focus, stay motivated, and grow. Whether personal or professional, goals should stretch you without overwhelming you. In this third article in the series, we will work through crafting goals that work for you, using questions to refine your focus and frameworks like SMART/SMARTER goals and SPRINTS to bring your plans to life. If you have not reviewed the previous articles, Year-End Review Tips for Leaders: 10 Questions to Guide You and Design the Year You Want: Planning for Upcoming Year, those may be useful to help with your goal setting exercise. In each article, there are questions that can help you review the year and identify key achievements you are looking for in the upcoming year.

“The major reason for setting a goal is for what it makes of you to accomplish it. What it makes of you will always be the far greater value than what you get.” — Denis Waitley

Questions to Define and Achieve Your Goals.

What goals align with my vision for 2025?

  • Look back at your vision for the year ahead: What specific goals can you set to bring that vision to life?

  • Break it down: Focus on goals that are relevant to your personal growth and professional success.

What areas of my life do I want to impact?

  • Consider the key areas of your life: professional, personal, health, financial, spiritual or relationships and decide which ones matter most for you right now.

  • How will setting goals in these areas impact other parts of my life? What are the benefits of this?

What smaller steps will help me stay on track?

  • Use the SPRINT framework to break your year into smaller, manageable periods.

  • Plan for 13-week sprints with specific milestones to create urgency and keep momentum.

  • Ensuring your goals are achievable is critical in remaining engaged and motivated to reach the finish line.

How will I measure success?

  • Define how you’ll track your progress. Use tools like a daily planner or strategic roadmap to keep your goals visible.

  • Ask yourself: What does “done” look like for this goal? This is critical. Having the vision for what ‘complete’ looks like makes the outcome not only more tangible, but likely.

What resources or habits will support my goals?

  • Identify the tools, time, and support you’ll need.

  • Consider how habits and routines can help you make consistent progress.

What will I do when challenges arise?

  • Build flexibility into your goals by planning for setbacks.

  • Revisit and revise your goals using the “Evaluate and React” steps from SMARTER goal-setting frameworks.

Using SMART and SMARTER Frameworks

Having a framework to bring your goals to life will help structure them in a way that continues to provide structure to how you will achieve them. Most people have heard of the SMART framework; below is how I approach it, and have added further steps to create the SMARTER framework to round out the actions once you get started on your goal achievement journey.

  • Specific: Clearly define what you want to achieve.

  • Measurable: Decide how you’ll track progress.

  • Attainable: Ensure your goal is realistic yet challenging.

  • Relevant: Focus on what matters most to your vision.

  • Time-Based: Set a clear deadline.

Adding the SMARTER elements:

  • Evaluate: Regularly assess your progress.

  • React: Adjust your approach based on what’s working (or not).

Maintaining Motivation and Momentum

Setting goals is just the first step; staying motivated and accountable is what keeps you moving forward. Here’s how you can maintain momentum throughout the year.

  1. Celebrate small wins. Acknowledge progress to stay motivated. Take time as often as the end of each day, but certainly weekly to review the wins and celebrate the movement forward.

  2. Keep your goals visible. Use tools like vision boards, apps like Miro, or even physical reminders.

  3. Create accountability. Share your goals with a mentor or team for support and feedback.

Closing the Gap Between Vision and Reality

Goals are the compass that aligns your actions with your aspirations, guiding you toward growth and fulfillment. Setting them thoughtfully ensures your time and energy are directed toward what truly matters. As you start your goal-setting process for the new year, remember: this isn’t just about what you achieve, it’s about whom you become along the way. The journey is always more valuable and rewarding than the destination by itself. Using the steps to review the year, plan ahead, and capture the key objectives you want to achieve in the coming months will set you up on a path of learning and success.
